How Do Pyrometers and Infrared Thermometers Work?

Understanding Infared Radiation 

Infared radiation, also known as Infared light, is a type of electromagnetic radiation produced when atoms absorb and then release energy. There are different types of Infared radiation depending on the wavelength-near Infared, mid Infared and far Infared. It is possible to measure this radiation through heat since they are directly proportional. The hotter an object, the more radiation it emits but we cannot measure the heat without risking injury. That is why we utilize instruments like a IR pyrometer and Infared thermometer to do so  

How Do Pyrometers Work? 

When an object is heated due to chemical reactions or other causes, it emits radiation. The hotter the object, the more radiation it releases.  

A pyrometer consists of three components-optical system, detector and signal processing unit. When focused on a object, the optical system detects the amount of radiation and focuses it on the detector. The detector then converts the radiation into an electic signal. Finally, the signal processing unit converts this electric signal into a temperature reading and displays a digital or analog output. 

There are different types of pyrometers. A high-temperature pyrometer is designed for extremely hot environments, while ratio and two-color pyrometers enhance accuracy by compensating for factors like emissivity and environmental conditions through advanced calculations. 

How Infared Thermometers Work? 

A Infared thermometer works in a similar way to a pyrometer since they use the exact same technologies to measure radiation In fact, both the terms are often used interchangeably, however, there are crucial differences between both the instruments 

Infrared thermometers detect infrared radiation emitted by all objects, allowing for a wide temperature range. On the other hand, a pyrometer measures temperature based on visible light, limiting their use to high-temperature objects. Another difference between both the instruments is portability.
